February Newsletter
Hope everyone is having a great start to the new year. Spring will be here before you know it, even though I have to ask where did our winter weather go. The Club is in full swing for the year with great activities coming up and of course the distribution of monies earned to benefit our community through Welfare and Services and Scholarships.
Welfare and Services is accepting applications for organizations on, or that are affiliated with, Ft Gordon. Scholarship applications are being distributed to the high schools and will be made available at the thrift shop. If you know of a worthwhile organization, or are a spouse who wants to continue with education, or have a child who will be entering college please make sure to follow up with Sheri Goings for Welfare and Services, or Kimberly Primeaux for scholarships.
The Christmas gift wrap was a great success. I would like to thank Joanie Bryant for her commitment and determination to fulfill this task we took on as a club. I would also like to thank all of you who gave of your precious time when you had your own family events to tend to during this holiday season. Thank you so much!
Our February event is going to be a show stopper. What more could you ask for? A comforting massage? A new hair style? A refreshing skin care make-over? How about all the above. If you're not there you're really missing something. I know we could all use a little pampering, so I hope to see you there.
Happy Valentines Day!

How important is RSVP etiquette?
We must RSVP. It is not an option. Think of the host.
It is a matter of respecting that other person's invitation.
Even if you are going to decline, you should always contact the host.
The other thing that we see these days is regrets only. I am finding that
people who are putting regrets only on the invitation, and they are
regretting it. People aren't calling at all. They really don't have a good idea
of a head count. So, we are finding that people are actually moving away
from the regret because that was not working. People were saying nothing.
This is when people would respond only by 'RSVP regrets.'
This does not give the host much of an idea what the guest regrets.
•Ten Etiquette Rules for Children Teaching manners to your children gives them the tools to function and succeed as adults. Ann Marie Sabath, author of Business Etiquette: 101 Ways to Conduct Business with Charm and Savvy, says that children should know these ten rules of etiquette.
•1. How to Dine
•When invited to a pre-arranged meal, always use your utensils from the "outside in." After all, utensils are set in the order that food will be served.
•2. Telephone Manners
•When calling a friend, identify yourself to the person who answers the phone before asking to speak your friend. By doing so, the parents or other family member who answer the phone will appreciate this courtesy and see you as friendly.
•3. On Correspondence
•Anytime it takes someone more than 15 minutes to do something for you, send the person a thank-you note. By doing so, the person will know you really appreciated what was done for you.
•4. Be Gracious
•When you are sent an invitation that requires an RSVP, be sure to let the person know if you will be able to go to the gathering. After all, "RSVP" means "respond if you please."
•5. Shoes Are Important
•When getting dressed each day, be sure that your shoes are well-maintained. People associate the way you take care of your shoes with the way you handle detail in the rest of your life.
•6. Be Open to New Foods
•When you are invited out to eat and are served a food that is not your favorite, try a piece of it anyway. You may be surprised and find that you end up liking it.
•7. Ask Questions
•When talking with friends and family, always make a point of asking them questions about themselves. People will see you as interesting if you are interested in them.
•8. At the Table
•When eating a roll, be sure to break off a bite-sized piece at a time. No bread-and-butter sandwiches, please.
•9. Be Friendly
•When you are in school, be cool by making a point to talk with that new kid in your class. If the tables were turned, wouldn't that make you feel good?
•10. The Rule of Twelve
•When talking with others, always use a form of thanks and the person's name in the first 12 words you speak ("It's good to see you, Mary," or "Thanks for picking me up from soccer, Dad.") By following this rule of 12, people will want to continue to do nice things for you. From the show Profession Confessions
FGSC Volunteer Corner
A few years ago at a volunteer installation ceremony, the Commanding General spoke of patriotism in a variety of ways. This was the same year that then Secretary of State Colin Powell called Americans of all ages to go out and Volunteer. What a better way to express gratitude to the greatest nation in the world and those who live here than to give of your time and talents. It is in this spirit that many of us have come and joined the Fort Gordon Service Club. We all so many talents and gifts that I am amazed daily of all the good we accomplish both as individuals as well as a combined group. Along with the spirit of Volunteering, it is also vital that we recognize members of the club who have given of themselves to fulfill the clubs goals as well as live the army values in all their actions.
In this spirit, I thought it might be helpful to know how to nominate a member for Volunteer of the Month for the Service club. There are a few requirements that each nominee should poses, the first and most obvious of course, is the person should be a member of the Club. Another is that all the volunteer hours should be for the club or on behalf of the club. The nominees work for the month or quarter should have a direct impact on the success or goal of the club itself. A great example of someone who would be a prime example for this could be a chairman of a special project such as the luau or flea market. Many of our members volunteer for many organizations on post. I, for one, volunteer my time for AFTB. Although I may do many great things for AFTB, they do not count for FGSC, so I should not be nominated for my work with AFTB. Although I would impact the community, it is not a club function. The last criteria are that a formal write up should be submitted to the board for consideration of the nomination.
As FGSC members, we continue to strive to live daily up to those ideals we all hold dear. I know that for each of us, that ideal holds a different meaning and expectation. Thank you for giving the army another resource that impacts each of us everyday.

You Should Pamper Yourself
Although we are living in the South, February let's us know that it is truly winter. After a string of cold days and cold hands are you ready for a little break? We are, and we're so excited about spending the evening with friends relaxing and being pampered. But the pampering does not have to stop when the function ends. Ways and Means will be offering pamper baskets that are sure to keep you relaxed and rested. Stop by and see them and the other items in the Ways in Means area. Ways and Means also needs your help. As we look toward the rest of this year and planning for the next FGSC Board year we would like to know what kinds of items you would like to see offered. This will help us get a head start on shopping and provide input for next year's board. In the past Polish Pottery has been the most frequently requested item. These days we are not seeing as big a demand. What are you looking for? Are you looking for jewelry, home decor, baskets, pottery, Fort Gordon items, Augusta items, one of a kind seasonal items? We know that there are many other types of things that we have not listed here. Please give us your input. You can email us at mariaday3@aol.com or smith210@charter.net. You can call us at 364-5051 (Maria) or 796-6307 (Deb). We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much! Deb and Maria
Tid bits From the Thrift Shop
Things were very busy during the month of December at the Thrift Shop.
We Adopted two military families for Christmas and had a can food drive for them. The customers came through for us with great results. They even brought new wrapped presents for the seven children in the two families.
We also collected toilet articles for the veterans - we have the best customers in the area..
Our volunteer for the month of December is Dora Cabrera. Dora comes to us from Texas, she lives on post with her son Orlando, her daughter-in-law Neannette, and her grandchildren Gabby, Myra, Galisson and Orlando Jr.Dora works at the consignment desk. She welcomes the customers with a smile and a good attitude. With volunteers like Dora no wonder we have the success we do. Thank you Dora for your service to our community.
Our house are Tuesday and Thursday 9:30-3:00pm. The first Saturday of the month January through May 9:30-2:00pm. Phone 791-2779
